Guest Speaker Biography (嘉宾简介)

Professor Roy F. Baumeister was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2015. He received his A.B. and Ph.D. from Princeton University. Afterwards, he worked as a post-doctoral fellow at University of California at Berkeley for a year. He then worked at Case Western Reserve University for about 25 years. Afterwards, he worked at Florida State University and University of Queensland in Australia. Currently, he is an emeritus professor of these two universities. He conducts research on the self, self-esteem, self-control, the need to belong, emotion, and meaning of life etc. In google scholar, his H-Index was 211, and the total number of citations of his articles and books was 316,140.

Topic Introduction (主题介绍)

What are the psychological differences between live in-person interaction and communicating via computer (CMC) or other technology? This talk reviews abundant research showing that CMC reduced impact and engagement. CMC has clear advantages compared to no social interaction, but also clear deficits compared to face-to-face interaction. Society is moving toward more CMC, so it is helpful to know what is gained and what is lost.

本次讲座比较面对面交往和网络交往的利弊。与面对面交往相比，网络交往投入性较低，对个体的影响较小。网络交往优于无社会交往，但是不如面对面交往。网络交往越来越多，需要知道使用它的益处和劣势。
